Logline

Max, Lotte and Margot are Jews and they are in peril as the Nazis set forth in Germany and proceeds on catching all the Jews and torturing them. As Max, Lotte, and Margot refuge from Germany to Philippines, their fates will be decided upon time.

Who, What, When, Where and Why

The story revolves around the three refugees: Max Weissler, Margot Pins-Kestenbaum, and Lotte-Cassel Hershfield. As Hitler came to ruling in the 1930s, these three refugees planned to escape their country Germany. They went to the Philippines as a place of refuge.

Opening Scene

The tone is quite unsettling and it shows forth the names of the refugees who escaped Germany. Germany was a dangerous place at that time. These 3 characters needed to escape soon during that time. The tone is a symbol of the hardships of what Max, Lotte, And Margot had to go through back in their childhood where Germany was no longer a safe place to live because of Adolf Hitler.

Act One

As Nazi’s regime has started, Hitler plans to eliminate all of the Jews. A leader like Adolf Hitler is formidable and charismatic. His power is above superior. Max, Margot, and Lotte are faced with a situation of whether to suffer or escape . Manuel Quezon establishes the open door policy for the Jewish refugees. This has helped the refugees escape the cruelty of Hitler. These three refugees have decided to accept Quezon’s help by refuging in the Philippines.

Act Two

Max, Margot, and Lotte were enjoying their time. They met new friends and started schooling. Max’s parents opened a bakeshop. Everything was good until the Japanese Occupational forces has invaded the Philippines and started a war. It became restless for these 3 refugees to consider their safety from the Japanese soldiers. As the other refugees admired Philippines’ kindness, some of them decided to join the war to fight the Japanese.

Act Three

After the war is over, the refugees continue to live to tell stories about their experience. They are forever thankful for what the Philippines has done to protect them. A refugee gave back the debt by helping the Typhoon Yolanda victims through donation and medical assistance. Peace has finally been achieved once again.

Reflection

Compassion is what builds a nation of freedom and glory. To do a good deed is something we shouldn’t be weary of. If there’s one thing that striked me in this video, it is Manuel L. Quezon’s consideration for the Jewish refugees. He established a policy where Jews would be able to find refuge in the Philippines. Other countries wouldn’t accept the refugees but the Philippines did not hesitate to lend a helping hand. This is just one inspiration that I have witnessed in my life. It inspired me to do good to other people and to be considerate. The refugees also feel welcomed once they set forth in this land. They considered Filipinos as generous and kind. This makes me prouder to be a Filipino.

So nag comment siya dun na “ako ba yung pinaparinggan mo?” Ganun ganun, and nagalit siya which is not true and actually yung sa comment niya…

Raph: So ayun, yan nga ang fake news pero lets give a bit more insight about fake news. Fake news has two sides, misinformation and disinformation. So most of us here, from our shared experience, talks about disinformation, it was made to bring up lies. Example yung nagsasabi ng walang pasok or yung kay engineer naman yung pagdate niya kay Catriona Gray. So yun, it meant to actually disinform people or give people the wrong information. Doon naman sa fake news na misinformation yun yung mga may pagkakamali sa datos, may mga typo. Hindi naman siya sinasadya pero it is still not the right and accurate information given. So yun nga, sa fake news hindi siya puro disinformation pero meron din tayong misinformation. Oh, ito si Robin parang meron siyang gusting ibring up.
Robin: Tuturuan ko kayo paano mag-spot ng fake news. Una, diba nakakaconvince ang mga article nila, check niyo muna yung sources.
Raph: Check the sources mommies.
Robin: Check niyo rin kung credible or hindi, kasi minsan yung ibang website nagpopost lang ng news for troll or for fun. Kaya hindi lahat ng news Pilipinas or yung buong mundo credible. Yun lang.
JC: Yung nga din, yung naalala ko yung sinabi ni sir Estrallado. Something about the website para makita mo kung credible is yung sa dulo. Diba usually (dot)com lang sa mga social media, pero yung mga government websites (dot)gov yung ending nung site.
Raph: Pero either ways parang mahirap pa rin iwasan si misinformation kasi hindi talaga natin alam kung saan pwede makuha ang tamang information. So most of the time, atleast we can eliminate yung disinformation.

Kurt: Ano, 7 hours usually pero dati 10 hours yun lalo na pag may nakikita akong memes diyan. Lalo na pag may nag sesend sa gc namin ng mga mukha ng mga kaklase ko, mag se-search pa ko sa iba’t ibang gc namin, hanapin ko mukha nila ganyan tapos i-seshare ko sa ibang tao.

Raphael: So, may cases talaga in social media na may nangyayaring addiction, minsan we lose track of time & deprives us of our time to be productive. So you should also learn that you should manage your time when it comes to social media. Social media is good. Marami siyang natulong sa society natin today, alam natin yung news, we can communicate with each other, mas madali mag-coordinate ng groupworks. We acknowledge that na may flaws ang social media.
JC: Kailangan lang natin matutunan yung limit natin. Social media is helpful pero to an extent lang na pag tumagal, di na siya helpful.

In a report form Rappler written by Buan, Lian . , Solicitor General Jose Calida again pushed legal boundaries by filing on Monday, February 10, a quo warranto petition against network giant ABS-CBN. Calida himself filed the petition before the Supreme Court (SC) past 9 am on Monday.  Calida accused ABS-CBN of unpaid taxes. The accusation states of  ABS-CBN’s violation on Section 11, Article XVI of the Constitution. Calida hit ABS-CBN’s products like ABS-CBN TV Plus, KBO Channel, and calling them “pay-per-view channel without prior approval or permit from the National Telecommunications Commission.” President Rodrigo Duterte has also complained against ABS-CBN for not airing his political ads despite the payment sent during the campaign. By then, Duterte has sworn to stop the network’s operations. If the quo warranto succeeds, ABS-CBN could apply for a new franchise. In February 12,2020, ABS-CBN denied the allegations in a form of a tweet with evidence . In a report from Rappler written by Pangue, Jene-Anne, February 14, About 500 people gathered in Esguerra Street in Quezon City on Friday, February 14, for the Red Friday protest organized by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), Altermidya Network, the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, Defend Jobs Philippines, and ABS-CBN employees and their supporters. ABS-CBN employees and their supporters held up signages to passing motorists, urging them to honk in support to press freedom. The organizers also out up a freedom wall where participants can write their message of solidarity with the network. ABS-CBN’s shutdown will affect to those in labor of the franchise and to the general public as well.

As a Filipino TV watcher, the shutdown of ABS-CBN will be a dark day for the fans/watchers and employees of the franchise. If the shutdown really happens, the livelihood of more than 11,000 workers is at stake. Viewers or watchers would be upset or disheartened. I say no to ABS-CBN shutdown for it has brought joy to millions of Filipinos and has given opportunities to thousands of workers. In a situation like this, you either fight for what is right or what is wrong but I say fight for what you love. Duterte’s willingness to shut down ABS-CBN is a threat to media freedom. It is a threat to freedom of speech. ABS-CBN has been a service for Filipinos who rely for news, entertainment, and public service. When ABS-CBN gets shut down for good, it will be a downfall for most Filipinos. There will be issues in labor and media freedom to be indicated. ABS-CBN has contributed so many as a center of news and entertainment. The largest broadcast network is one of the greatest contributors to Philippine media. If they take that away, they take away the love and the fun of the millions of Filipinos who are avid viewers and lovers of the channel.

There is no doubt that the shutdown will indeed affect many people especially the workers/laborers from the franchise. The general public would be saddened of this coming of this dark day. If you love something that has been with you throughout the years, you would understand that this is something you don’t want to be taken away. A broadcast network that has brought me news and entertainment. A channel that has brought me joy and love throughout my childhood is something I would stand with and I find worth defending. ABS-CBN has been a part of my childhood. If I were other people, I would acknowledge my opponents or my rivals as empathy. If Solicitor General Jose Calida and President Rodrigo Duterte would have sympathy to those affected, maybe by then this issue would not arise but for them they stand for what’s right but not fair to others. This is quite a risky and difficult decision they have to face with.

The impact of digital technology into our society

Digital technology has been with us for years. As we immerse ourselves from digital technology, the world around is becoming more advanced than the usual. Information can be accessed at the tip of our fingers. Human development has become rapid. Communication is much more efficient and time-friendly. Digital technology has contributed to us a lot. There are many things that has become easier to us but some things has become harder to resolve such as our addiction to technology. We have become so addicted to technology that we seem to ignore of what is in our environment. As we become so focused on our gadgets such as our mobile phone, we are susceptible to such danger if we ignore our environment. Such dangers we might put ourselves into are getting hit by a car, falling into a sewage tunnel, walking towards dangerous places, and etc. In other words, ignorance starts to happen when we lock ourselves into our phones because we want to be updated of whatever is happening in the media.

Having digital technology on our world has advantages although there are some disadvantages that we can enumerate yet these disadvantages can be resolved by self-control and discipline. Digital technology is still important in our world for it is part of growing in our world. The impact that it has made is wonderful. Digital technology has taught us innovate using technology. The old-fashioned ways of innovation still exist yet digital technology has enhanced innovation more than the preceding age “Industrial Revolution”. Media has evolved from a rock to a machine to a digital screen.

One example of how digital technology has made an impact is in the marketplace. Back then, buying and selling happens only in  a physical market. Consumer goods are present physically so as the place and transaction between the buyer and the seller. Now, buying and selling happens in our digital screens. The products can be seen through our digital screens. The marketplace is through an app or a website. Since it is only available through our screen, it’s downside is the legitimacy of the product whether it is real or not. The transaction between the seller and buyer can also be a risk.  The buyer can fool the seller by sending the fake product that is not matched upon the pictures nor details or by not sending the product at all after sending the money. The seller can fool the buyer by not sending the money after receiving the product. The money that we use in this digital marketplace is accessible through our gadgets just by storing it in an ATM  and using our digital devices such as smartphones to access it.

In conclusion, having digital technology is just as important as it is for the society we grew up with. There may be some risks and dangers however we can resolve it just by learning a few precaution/measures to follow. Digital technology has made a grave impact into our society. And that impact is far better.

As the world around us evolve year by year, it is because we can access or receive information to help us blossom as humans. The more we educate ourselves with countless information the more we develop our skills to the century. If we make our lives full of knowledge and skills, we begin to create a path of development. We start to learn more as we grow. Information creates a path of development because we learn so many things even if we forget some. As we learn, we start to grow and develop skills that helps us solve our problems. Information helps us catch up to the world of tomorrow.

Information as a Path to Prosperity

As information becomes embedded to our brains, we start to have a process of applying such ideas and thoughts in real life. We use information to create or innovate ideas that changes mankind from time to time. When we apply such knowledge in real life, we begin to prosper because we know how to use it. Information creates a path to prosperity because our clever minds are able to make something new and we see the importance of learning because we can use it as an everyday tool to change the world.

We don’t only use information to educate ourselves. We use information as a basis of our own opinion. As we receive news upon something, we have our own unique responses. From the information we receive, we create our own opinions. Democracy starts to happen because of this. We are motivated to fight for our freedom because information stimulates it. How does information affect laws, business/economic factors, society and culture?

Information helps create laws and boundaries among society. Information is a valuable evidence that proves that some laws should be implemented more often. The information such as criminal reports that people serve as a basis of evidence creates boundaries among society. It triggers the government to make the country a safer place by implementing laws.

The information based on business / economic factors are social studies that determines the status and progress of a business or the economy. These factors are affected by information. As information flows through business and economic factors, it becomes a basis of reliability and effectiveness through feedback and progress check. Any information could affect business / economic factors such as a bad review of a specified business could negatively affect it’s status and profit and an evaluative study of the government’s cooperation to the economy can contribute to it’s improving progress. In other words, reviews and feedback can either positively or negatively affect business / economic factors.

Information affects society and culture by educating people of every culture of each country has. The information covers the uniqueness of the society. The effects of these information to society and culture are less racism and more respect. If we know the information behind every person’s beliefs and culture, we would learn how to respect them. Being educated of such information like this makes us better humans to society.

Freedom of the press

The press are groups of people who spread information around the world through broadcast. When it comes gathering information, these people are usually restless for finding countless information (news) for the world to see. They are facilitating the world to be educated with true and valuable information. Their responsibility to speak of the truth can be risky because there are those people who want to hide the truth such as the government. These kinds of people are willing to take any means for the truth to not be told. As part of the society, there should always be freedom for those who keep media a stream of useful information. At times, they are risking a lot to uncover the truth. Their freedom should be endless because they keep the world ahead by speaking nothing but the truth. We should appreciate for they have a tough job in this world yet they never give up.

Libel laws and censorship

Both libel laws and censorship are nothing but threats to our civil liberties because it abolishes the freedom of speech. Sometimes those who take a stand are being threatened to be silent for a simple yet elaborate speech with emphasis awakens the world of the truth and realization.

Media: The principle of self-regulation

The principle of self-regulation aims to expose the truth in an accurate and invulnerable way. The people behind this knows that the world deserves factual information that are true. The principle of honesty is like the principle of self-regulation. It is necessary to have the principle of self-regulation for false or inaccurate information can affect the whole world. People would be fooled and maybe even make false assumptions upon a topic or article. If we teach the world of education, this is how we should teach them to have this principle to be applied in their lives.
